PRC Names Participants In "More Channels, More Service" Round Two
(Denver) Public Radio Capital (PRC) today announced the selection of participants in the second round of its "More Channels, More Service" program to assist these organizations in planning for expanding public service by acquiring additional radio stations.
PRC broadens the reach of public radio nationwide through partnerships with educational institutions and public broadcasters. Those selected for the "More Channels, More Service" project include:
- Alabama Public Radio
- Capital Community Broadcasting, Juneau, AK
- Iowa Public Radio
- KFAI, Minneapolis, MN
- KNPR, Las Vegas, NV
- KQED, San Francisco, CA
- KUT Radio, Austin, TX
- Pacifica Foundation
- Southern California Public Radio, LA
- WMHT, Schenectady, NY
- WMUB, Oxford, OH
- WNCU, Durham, NC
"We had very strong applications from organizations across the country who wanted to participate," said Dennis Hamilton, PRC's project manager for the second round of the "More Channels, More Service" project. "And we're delighted to be working with such strong public services broadcasters from coast to coast, representing small communities, large metropolitan areas, and diverse public radio formats, including organizations like KQED and Pacifica that already own more than one station. Every one of these organizations is committed to service growth using additional radio channels. ‘More Channels, More Service' will help them realize their vision."
The recently completed first round of "More Channels, More Service," funded in part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, resulted in new stations and increased public service in Amarillo, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and Tulsa, Oklahoma with other expansion plans in the pipeline. Elements of PRC's "More Channels, More Service" project include market research to surface new station acquisition opportunities, site visit consulting to assess organizational readiness for station acquisitions, business modeling to create 10-year financial projections for multiple station acquisition and operations, detailed information to explain the process of acquiring and financing new stations, and a special conference in Denver in November 2005 to bring together local station board members, representatives of institutional licensees and station managers of the participating organizations. Consultant Tom Livingston of Livingston Associates will be assisting PRC and the participants on this project.
The second round of "More Channels, More Service" is made possible through a generous anonymous grant of $150,000 to Public Radio Capital. "Since our founding in 2001, foundations and individual donors have made significant grants toward PRC's important work on behalf of public broadcasting," said Susan Harmon, who along with Marc Hand serves as PRC's Managing Director. "This latest gift provides the seed money these broadcasters need to expand on their already excellent services."
