NPR News and Information now heard in the Imperial Valley
KPBS wanted to broadcast its public radio programming to the growing population of South Eastern California in the Imperial Valley, but its radio station lacked the necessary signal strength. The Imperial Valley was one of the largest areas in the country without public radio programming, and San Diego State University (KPBS’ license owner) had two campuses there.
In fall of 2004, PRC represented KPBS in its negotiations to acquire a commercial FM station in Calexico, CA. As a result of this expansion, approximately 100,000 listeners in the Imperial Valley community now have access to English-language public radio news and information services, including programs like Morning Edition® and BBC News. San Diego State University is able to broadcast KPBS’ programming on all of its campuses, and bring a valuable public service to Imperial Valley residents.
KPBS enriches the lives of people in the San Diego region through unique media services. These high quality radio, TV, Web and community activities educate, inspire, entertain, and advance civic involvement, celebration of culture and the power of diverse perspectives.
